Cuttin’ Wood

StereoCab-m250Many of you are probably looking at this photo and thinking what is so significant about it.  Look closer.  You might recall that the cabinet on the left holding the audio components was taller.  Twelve inches taller to be exact.  You can also discern that we are video luddites.  Evidence of that is the modern day equivalent rabbit ear antenna on top of the turntable (the thing that played music before MP3’s) feeding the signal to the behemoth, as in weight not dimensions, CRT TV.  Also, recognizable is a VHS tape player.  It even works.  Although, during this project something was rattling around inside and a sizable plastic lever of some sort falls out.  Try that with your smartphone.

Now a person might be asking, “So Greg why did you take a perfectly nice piece of authentic “Made in Denmark” stamped, teak veneered, particle board furniture and take out 12 inches?  So happens that the previously mentioned TV is so heavy that Paula and I aren’t able to move it any more.  Which means the dust bunnies have had free reign to proliferate and collect behind the furniture – and boy have they!!  So in order to eradicate the bunnies we are going to – now grab hold of something – move into the 21st century and get a flat screen TV!!  Kinda’ like buying a new car when the ashtrays get full.  Ooooops, cars don’t come with ashtrays any more.  In order to accommodate that 80″ ginormous screen the taller cabinet had to be lowered flush with the TV stand.  IT was that or purchase a new entertainment center.  Have you priced made in China teak veneered particle board  furniture lately?

Dad did supply the craftsmanship to take out the 12 inch section.  Time to develop a plan of action, disassemble, cut boards and reassemble was around three hours.  That includes travel time to and from Cheryl’s to use Mike’s table saw.  Took me four plus hours to clear out the dust bunnies and reconnect all the components.  But, the cables are routed and bundled up pretty.

Now to educate myself on TV’s.  Anybody have recommendations?

Oh, it is going to be something in the neighborhood of 40 inch screen.
